Aquatic Training Convert - Lindsey

Objective

To have mobility while in water and get a pain free workout.

Background

Like many people Lindsey cannot use a standard treadmill due to minor knee injuries. Lindey’s personal trainer suggested HYDRO PHYSIO as a more pain free alternative.

Programme

  • Duration: 30 minutes
  • Water Temperature: 32˚C
  • Speed: 3.0kph warm up, increasing to 6.0kph
  • Depth: 1100mm reduced to 750mm
  • Resistance Jets: Low setting for 10 minutes
  • Direction: Forwards
  • Number of Sessions: 20

Outcomes

The added resistance jets increased Lindsey's exercise intensity, helping her to burn more calories. Water depth was adjusted throughout Lindsey's session to target different muscle groups, which affected weight bearing and pressure on lower limbs. Lack of exercise is recognised as a contributing factor to weight problems. HYDRO PHYSIO gives the opportunity to train without pain.

Studies with HYDRO PHYSIO included bariatric patients, who had previously been unable to exercise. The convenient access and ability to train in water at waist height, affecting a 50% reduction in weight, allowed these patients to start exercising and motivated them to continue.

Arthritis and Improving Overall Health - David

Objective

Managing pain and becoming healthier.

Background

An arthritic right hip and recovery from a broken ankle compounded David's weight problem and made exercise extremely difficult.

Programme

  • Duration: 30 minutes
  • Water Temperature: 31˚C
  • Speed: 3.0kph gradually increasing to 5.0kph
  • Depth: 1200mm reduced to 1100mm
  • Resistance Jets: Not activated
  • Direction: Forwards and backwards
  • Number of Sessions: 20

Outcomes

David had broken his ankle eight months previously and also suffered from an arthritic hip. This meant that he was in constant back and ankle pain and found it difficult to exercise.

Already overweight, David was looking for a low impact, pain-free way to exercise and improve his overall health.

To begin with, David did just four minutes on the treadmill at a speed of 3.0kph with the water level at 1200mm, making it a comfortable introduction to the aquatic therapy programme.

Four sessions later, David was running at a speed of 5.0kph for 30 minutes and the water level had been reduced to 1100mm to increase load-bearing. This increased effort reflects his enhanced fitness levels and significant progress. We've seen incredible results from David's programme as he's already lost 4 stone and reports that his ankle is 90% better and his back is 80% better.

Sue - Weight Loss

Objective

Exercising for weight loss with severe joint pain.

Background

Sue Cartwight had undergone two knee replacement operations, spinal fusion surgery and was on course for a new hip until now.

Keeping fit had been difficult due to severe joint pain so she was only able to carry out gentle exercise and moderate walking.

Programme

  • Duration: 30 minutes per session
  • Water Temperature: 31˚C
  • Speed: 4.5kph to 9.0kph as sessions developed
  • Depth: 1200mm reduced to 800mm
  • Resistance Jets: Activated
  • Direction: Forward and reverse
  • Number of Sessions: 24

Outcomes

Using the hydrotherapy treadmill enabled Sue to increase the intensity of her exercise to running, without affecting her knees. The water decompressed her joints and also reduce weight-bearing during exercise, allowing Sue to push herself to achieve greater fitness and weight loss.

As Sue progressed, the treadmill's speed was increased, the water level dropped and the resistance jets activated, making her workout more challenging and therefore burning more calories. Losing weight has enhanced Sue's quality of life, reduced her pain and improved the condition of Sue's joints. After just 24 sessions, combined with diet, Sue has lost a staggering 64 pounds

Postnatal Weightloss - Nin

Objective

Weight loss after having a baby.

Background

Following the birth of her baby, Nin was keen to lose weight and get back into her clothes as soon as possible. The HYDRO PHYSIO treadmill helped her achieve her target.

Programme

  • Duration: 30 minutes per session
  • Water Temperature: 31˚C
  • Speed: 4.0 to 8.0kph as sessions developed
  • Depth: 1000mm reduced to 600mm
  • Resistance Jets: Not activated
  • Direction: Forwards and backwards
  • Number of Sessions: 10

Outcomes

Nin's HYDRO PHYSIO treadmill sessions started at a speed of 4.0kph and gradually increased until she was running at a speed of 8.0kph. The water level was dropped from the initial setting of 1000mm reduced to 600mm, making the activity more challenging and burning more calories. The Wellbeing Pool was included in the programme for upper body exercises and also core work. Exercising in the warm water made this a gentle, enjoyable experience for Nin, which she told us was essential after childbirth and the demands of caring for a new baby. Nin is delighted to be toned up and back into her ‘normal’ clothes.
