Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD) - Louisa

Objective

Relief of symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD) symptoms during pregnancy.

Background

Louisa was desperate to get relief from the debilitating back pain and walking difficulties caused by SPD during her pregnancy. Doctors told her to take paracetamol and get bed rest to manage her symptoms but with a young child, a horse and eight weeks until the due date, this was not an option.

Programme

  • Duration: 30 minutes
  • Water Temperature: 31˚C
  • Speed: 3.0 to 3.5kph as sessions developed
  • Depth: 1200mm
  • Resistance Jets: Not activated
  • Direction: Forwards
  • Number of Sessions: 6

Outcomes

SPD and severe sciatica down both legs meant that Louisa couldn't sit for more than two minutes at a time. Constant pain was also affecting her sleep, making her feel exhausted and unwell.

Sessions gently walking in the HYDRO Treadmill with floatation therapy in the Wellbeing Pool worked towards loosening everything up and strengthening her core, both vital in preventing the condition from getting worse. Warm water completely relaxed her muscles and relieved her pain.

Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD) - Kate

Objective

Relief of symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD) symptoms during pregnancy.

Background

At 28 weeks gestation Kate was diagnosed with SPD. It started as an ache but gradually got worse until eventually she had difficulty walking and needed to use a crutch at times.

Programme

  • Duration: 20 minutes per session
  • Water Temperature: 31˚C
  • Speed: 0.5 to 3.0kph as sessions developed
  • Depth: 1145mm
  • Resistance Jets: Not activated
  • Direction: Forwards, backwards and sideways
  • Number of Sessions: 3

Outcomes

SPD is a collection of uncomfortable symptoms caused by a misalignment or stiffness of the pelvic joints at either the back or front of your pelvis. SPD is not harmful to the baby, but it can cause severe pain around the pelvic area, which can be disabling in its extreme form. Walking on dry land was painful for Kate and, in particular, going up step and getting in and out of the car.

Sessions in the HYDRO Treadmill allowed her to keep moving, which is essential as even short periods of inactivity can result in muscles wasting, and tissue structures becoming more rigid and less flexible.

Postnatal Weightloss - Nin

Objective

Weight loss after having a baby.

Background

Following the birth of her baby, Nin was keen to lose weight and get back into her clothes as soon as possible. HYDRO PHYSIO’s Treadmill helped her achieve her target.

Programme

  • Duration: 30 minutes per session
  • Water Temperature: 31˚C
  • Speed: 4.0 to 8.0kph as sessions developed
  • Depth: 1000mm down to 600mm
  • Resistance Jets: Not activated
  • Direction: Forwards and backwards
  • Number of Sessions: 10

Outcomes

Nin's HYDRO PHYSIO Treadmill sessions started at a speed of 4.0kph and gradually increased until she was running at a speed of 8.0kph. The water level was dropped from the initial setting of 1000mm right down to 600mm, making the activity more challenging and burning more calories. The Wellbeing Pool was included in the programme for upper body exercises and also core work. Exercising in the warm water made this a gentle, enjoyable experience for Nin, which she told us was essential after childbirth and the demands of caring for a new baby. Nin is delighted to be toned up and back into her ‘normal’ clothes.
